PC Game Review - Tales of Monkey Island Episode 2: The Siege of Spinner Cay

Tales of Monkey Island Season One, Episode Two (The Siege of Spinner Cay) carries on directly where the first one episode left off – with Guybrush held at sword-point on his own shop. The fact that the owner of this sword turns out to be, among other things, his greatest fan is not really much consolation under the circumstances...

Graphically it’s much like the first episode; good, nicely detailed and with a style that suits the game very well. The music is again great and the voice acting is top quality. The storyline is pretty good, but the characters, puzzles and length are a little weaker than the first episode. Guybrush’s continuing search for La Sponge Grande leads to many humorous situations, and on the whole Monkey Island fans are going to enjoy The Siege of Spinner Cay. Merpeople, mystical statues, obsessed pirate hunters... they're all here in Tales of Monkey Island Episode 2.

The main criticism I have is with the movement interface – while it’s generally okay once you get used to it, the entry and exit points on some screens are so close together that it becomes a real pain and you quite often end up going immediately back to the screen you’ve just exited from. Combined with the slight weaknesses in the game and its seemingly shorter length (though I can’t quite confirm this, others on TellTale Games’ forums seem to agree), I’m giving it 7/10. Good, but perhaps a little disappointing considering the first episode was excellent.
